Ford Community Center

We  transform a 50-year-old house in the Nang Loeng neighborhood of Bangkok into a versatile public space for all ages. To shift the building from a private residence to an accessible community center, the design preserves the original framework while significantly increasing transparency. On the ground floor, formerly solid concrete walls were opened up and integrated with glass blocks, drawing in natural light and seamlessly connecting the interior with the outdoors.

The updated layout incorporates flexible activity spaces, a standard kitchen, a community library, and a children’s counseling room. Carefully positioned low-level windows respond directly to the users, aligning with a child’s eye level and accommodating the traditional Thai custom of floor seating. To further enhance the spatial volume, the existing gypsum ceilings were removed. This intervention exposes the raw concrete overhead, revealing the wood-grain imprint of the original formwork and emphasizing an honest material palette.
