Khaoyai Sunset Retreat
The site’s dramatic hilltop location overlooking the mountain ranges of Khaoyai National Park inspired the house’s concept. From the first visit, we envisioned a long “bridge” structure spanning two lower buildings to frame the mountain sunsets. The design reveals the vista gradually as visitors enter and culminates in the al-fresco “taitoon” space beneath the bridge, which acts as a widescreen window to the shifting sunsets.

The compound has three clusters: the Main House atop the hill with six bedrooms, the Pool/Guest House with two bedrooms, and the Staff House with four bedrooms. The Main House is divided into three wings so separate families can use it independently. A wheelchair-accessible path from the garage leads to the shared living, dining and kitchen space in the upper “bridge.” Downhill, the Pool House functions as a stand-alone guest unit with its own outdoor kitchen and living areas beside the pool.

Low-tech tropical design strategies temper sun exposure while keeping the sunset views. Deep overhangs reduce heat gain, and slim building forms maximise cross-ventilation and daylight. Rainwater collected from the Pool House butterfly roof is stored under the pool. Local, low-maintenance materials were chosen to age gracefully, and the garage walkway roof is designed to accommodate future solar panels.
