THE KEEP
We were tasked with creating a sensitive addition to an existing compound in a large country estate in Maerim district just north of Chiangmai. We have proposed a few versions for this small addition to a cluster of houses that were designed by northern Thai architect Ong-ard Satrabhandhu. This final scheme with its symmetry and vernacular roof was finally chosen for it best complements the classical language of the French colonial style of the original buildings.
The Keep is a small pool house that features an open living space with a large fireplace as its centerpiece. This al-fresco living room directly opens up to a dark and long lap-pool that is conceived to be like a 20-meter long mirror that reflects its natural context -the lush greenery, the mountain range and the big open sky. The living space also faces the beautiful mountain range beyond. Besides the large living space, The Keep also houses a small kitchen, an artist studio and a mezzanine guest bedroom.
